Most people don’t have experience using a large moving truck. You don’t have to be a professional truck driver to drive a moving truck safely, but you should follow a few tips to drive it safely and to make sure your things arrive in one piece. Here are three easy tips for using a large moving truck.
Make sure you have a truck that’s large enough for all your belongings. You should also have enough pads to fill in the gaps between your boxes and furniture. Load heavy, large items first and use straps to secure them in place. You don’t want these to crush your smaller, lighter items. It may be wise to disassemble furniture so that it fits better. Roll up rugs, and make sure, if possible, that weight is distributed evenly across the truck. It may take a bit of planning to pack the truck, but it’s necessary to make sure your stuff doesn’t get broken.
Know Your Roads
If possible, use a personal vehicle to drive the route to your new place. Make mental notes of things such as traffic patterns, construction, narrow roads, tough turns, etc. While navigating, know that right turns can be pretty tricky and you need to have the right amount of space. If you find a street or a turn unsuitable for the truck, find an alternative route. If you’re traveling a long distance, you may be unable to drive the route in advance. In this case, you’ll want to research the route, making the same types of notes as if you would while driving it.
Use Mirrors Wisely
Moving trucks don’t have rearview mirrors. If you aren’t experienced with driving moving trucks, this can make driving in reverse difficult or possibly even dangerous. However, the side mirrors on the truck are designed to allow you to see the back of the truck very well. It may be worth practicing a bit in a parking lot or other open area so you can get used to the mirrors. Another option is to spend a little extra money and get a truck with a rearview camera (if this is an option from the truck rental company).
Using a large moving truck doesn’t have to be hard. Packing smart, knowing the roads, and properly using mirrors are three tips that will make the experience much easier and safer. More importantly, they’ll keep you and everyone else on the road safe. Good luck with your move!
